Birthday tapas

My mother's and sister's birthdays fall within 5 days of each other right at the end of November, so we've traditionally celebrated them together, and this year I offered to host the festivities. To try and ensure that everyone got to eat something they loved, I suggested a small plates dinner, and there was universal approval so I ran with it.

I think you'll agree that it looks pretty tasty:

Left to right, that's patatas bravas (roasted potato wedges in the blue casserole, with spicy tomato sauce and aioli for topping) and chicken souvlaki; grilled chorizo sausage with mustards and barbecue sauce; caprese salad; and grilled mixed vegetables. Not pictured here are these gorgeous devils, which we ate as appetizers:

Those are huge Medjool dates wrapped in thick-cut bacon and roasted until warm and delicious. They went quickly.

Everyone sat on the comfy couches and chatted while we noshed and drank. For birthday dessert we had this stunning number, courtesy of the Smitten Kitchen cookbook:

That's a marbled pumpkin cheesecake tart with gingersnap crust, and it was exceedingly well-received, shall we say. Very tasty.

All in all it was a terrific way to spend an evening - we love eating like this, lots of big flavours and variety on the plate. It was a ton of work, I won't lie, but totally worth it for the end result.

Happy birthday, Mom and Jenn. We love you guys!
